Electronic Dance Music has reached a new frontier, with MC Flipside at the helm. One part legend, one part visionary, MC Flipside is an EDM pioneer whose experience constantly propels the genre forward, pushing boundaries and pleasing audiences. His myriad of musical abilities has earned him the reputation as Canada’s Most Versatile EDM artist, drawing music heavyweights to his studio and selling out shows worldwide.

A trailblazer in his hometown of Toronto, Canada, Flipside was a key player in galvanizing its underground music scene. He continues to attract droves of fans, performing regularly at Guvernment (Canada’s number one EDM club,) This is London and the legendary Comfort Zone. Flipside has toured the globe, playing shows across North America, Europe, South America, Asia and Australia. In the last 5 years alone, Flipside has had over 50 chart-topping tracks on Beatport, iTunes, Track it Down and Stompy. This includes consecutive No. 1 tracks in multiple genres; including House, Techno, Progressive, Electro and Breaks.

Flipside is sought out and supported by some of the industry’s biggest names: Deadmau5, Armand Van Helden, Bob Sinclair, David Guetta, Wolfgang Gartner, Laidback Luke, Josh Wink, Swedish House Mafia, Kaskade, Axwell and Paul Van Dyk. MC Flipside (MC aptly stands for Music Creator) is founder and owner of PBR Recordings, which is home to artists like A-Divizion, Bassjackers, Bart B More, Carlo Lio, DJ PP, Funkagenda, Hatiras, Matteo Di Marr and Prok and Fitch.

The same unbridled energy Flipside is known for on stage is also behind PBR’s sister record label, DBR Recordings, which concentrates on deeper tech sounds. He has also been featured on renowned international labels like Mau5trap, Toolroom Records, CR2, Ministry of Sound, Big In Ibiza and Ultra. Alongside Deadmau5, MC Flipside performed his track “Hi Friend” at the prestigious Juno Awards in 2012, Canada’s equivalent to the Grammys. Flipside sets are dynamic and enthralling, whether he is DJing or showcasing his vocal talent and unparalleled mic technique. This engaging performer plays to the audience, hyping them up where the show becomes a symbiotic relationship between audience and entertainer. In this day and age of calculated, formulaic sets, that type of organic experience makes MC Flipside stand out and shine. With Flipside the only thing you know you’re going to get is a jaw-dropping spectacle, as he takes you on the journey that so many of today’s EDM artists find elusive.

Personable, charming, witty and charismatic – you cannot teach someone to be a stage performer, and with Flipside it just comes naturally. Constantly praised for his uncanny ability to write melodies, chords, on-the-spot lyrics and freestyle poetry, music producers marvel at his seemingly endless supply of ideas and positive energy, truly making him unique and his own, very marketable, brand.

This year Flipside further cements his status as a world-class producer, beginning with the first of many releases, Draganno, a groundbreaking effort that highlights his studio artistry over his recognized vocals.

In an industry of one-hit wonders and overnight sensations, Flipside remains a constant.

He attributes this to his passion for the music, love of making audiences happy and remaining true to his heart— which, at the core, is house music. Never one to follow trends, his range of influences may surprise you: Michael Jackson, George Michael, Stevie Wonder, Green Velvet and Louie Vega. Why? In Flipside’s words, none of them can be duplicated, which is the sign of a real artist.

If that’s the case, then MC Flipside is the definition of a true entertainer.

Music at Night 034 with special guest Mark Oliver (Monday March 25)

Originally from Scotland, Mark Oliver is presently based in Toronto and his influence on the electronic music industry is a profound one. Coming from a strong musical background, Mark exploded onto the club scene as a DJ in 1987 with his first residency at Tazmanian Ballroom in Toronto. Within a short year, demand for his sound had spread to Miami where he played at Scratch (South Beach, Miami’s very first night devoted to house).

Mark pioneered the rave movement in Canada by being the first DJ to play acid house and techno nights in 1988, as well as co-founding North America’s first rave organization, Exodus.

DJing seems to come naturally to Mark. He is frequently said to have the best ears in the business, as well as a keen ability to sniff out a hit well ahead of the pack. Combining remarkable technical ability with a sublime understanding of dynamics of the dancefloor, Mark is able to read and anticipate exactly what the crowd wants. Through his ability, dedication and perseverance, Mark has amassed a large and devoted following. Understanding the need to progress, he is constantly refining his technique, sounds and style, which keeps him in favour with the people he plays for.

Mark began a mammoth weekly residency at The Guvernment in 1996. For years, he was the only DJ to play the main room and his nine-hour weekly sets are legendary. Now, in his seventeenth year at The Guvernment (incredibly missing only ten nights within this time), Mark has helped propel the club to it’s place as one of the top wordwide clubbing destinations.

Although his name has become synonymous with The Guvernment, Mark still manages to make select international appearances at both clubs and festivals (and the occasional boat party). His ability to create an enormous atmosphere has also been witnessed at a plethora of private parties he has played for celebrities such as U2, Madonna, The Rolling Stones, Prince, and Lenny Kravitz.

Buzz is paramount for any DJ and to maintain such high levels of demand for more than two decades, is testament to Mark’s incredibly high standards and also his taste in music.

While he has been going gangbusters for years as a DJ, when not behind the decks, Mark displays his musical talent and production prowess in the studio with both remixes and original material.
