Let me start by saying thank you to all the wonderful and talented DJs that were guests on the show this past year: Hyland & Kavai, Missanova, Igor Vasev, Jace, Moe Bass, Hugo M, Footwork Fuel, and Blair Malott. You all rocked it. I must also thank all the listeners that tuned in, youre the reason Im still doing this for the past 8 years. And finally all those that donated to the show, thank you so much.
As we close in on another year, its time for the Music at Night Year Mix where I play my favorite tracks during 2018 and crown one track as the “track of the year”.
Have a great holiday season
Brennen Kovic
It’s not about where you’re from, or who you’ve been- it’s about where you’re going, and Deep Tech duo Hyland & Kavai know just where to take you when they get behind the decks and take control of a dim, hungry room with a signature sound that is deep, dark, sexy, and relentless all rolled into one finely curated techno package. Lost in the dark, digging deep into a movement that will leave you wanting more is where you’ll find yourself in Hyland & Kavai’s hands. Starting off young and DJing together since 2011, still in their early twenties, the Niagara natives Jay Hyland and Peter Kavai have a knack for providing gritty, funky basslines that will make heads bop uncontrollably, and bodies move accordingly on any dance floor. Because of this, Hyland & Kavai have become favourites in the Toronto underground scene, with a crowd who always knows just what kind of dirty groove they’re in for with this duo.
Holding down past residencies at the legendary Guvernment nightclub in Acid Lounge, as well as Cache and Terrace 44 have kept these two busy over the years, as well as playing Toronto underground staples like the formerly beloved Footwork, Coda, Nest, and Toika Lounge, and the notorious after-hours Comfort Zone. Hyland & Kavai have been around to watch Toronto’s dance music scene expand into something fierce and heavy, and have no doubt been a part of its rapid growth, playing alongside international names like Martin Buttrich, tiNi, Carlo Lio, Matt Sassari, Reelow, The Junkies, Victor Calderone, and never failing to deliver the dance floor to their desired destination.
Intrigued by scratching, breakbeats, and vynl sets, Igor Vasev evolved from top 40’s and his desire for electronic music was born. Facinated by ideas coming in and being able to momentarily create his own sound, Igor Vasev began his love fot expressing himself through spinning. Vasev’s passion and free spirit radiates when he’s on the decks. Starting at Studio L14, Opening for Walker&Royce, getting dark in 77’s underground, groovin on the Hamilton Boat Cruise and vibin at Modrn for SundayChills. His style versatility seperates and makes him different from others. From Techno and TechHouse to Trance and PsyTrance, his whole mind, body and soul are put into his work. In his words, “You get into a flow and songs begin to flawlessly form together, it’s a wave of euphoria you can just ride. You see the way people react and feel enjoyment to something you almost create. Its almost like the feeling of ‘pass the aux’.
